Arsène Wenger believes Arsenal’s new formation can liberate the attacking potential of Cesc Fabregas.
The Spanish midfielder has revelled in his side’s 4-3-3 line-up this season. The 22-year-old collected two goals and three assists in his first three appearances before picking up a hamstring injury against Portsmouth on August 22.
His manager argues that, like Frank Lampard, Fabregas tries to be involved at the start and the end of most moves. This is easier with a couple of colleagues covering in central midfield.
“He likes to play deep when you have the ball first, and then join in later,” said Wenger, speaking earlier this season.
"He’s a bit like Lampard in that. He wants to structure the game.
"Cesc likes to be at the start of things and then get on the end of things. And he can push forward more this season because he has two players around him who can defend.”
