GODSWILL AKPABIO U-18 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT KICKS OFF IN STYLE


The third edition of Chief (Dr) Godswill AKPABIO U-18 Football Competition has kicked off amid funfare in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Declaring the competition open, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, John Harry assured of government support for grassroots sports development. Harry reiterated the commitment of Governor Akpabio in putting the state in the map of sporting success.



“ We are not only supporting football, but this administration is committed to developing other sports in Akwa Ibom State. To this end, we are re-introducing schools sports festival as a way of discovering talents for the state and country,” Harry stated.

The commissioner for Youths and Sports in Akwa Ibom State also commended the coordinator of Grassroots Sports Federtion of Nigeria South South Hon. Bassey Ekpeyong for putting such a massive competition that attracted clubs from outside the country.

Several clubs from Nigeria, Benin Republic, Ghana and Togo are taking part in the weeklong competition. The final has now been moved to Saturday from the earlier scheduled Sunday to make way for the state celebrations.

Meanwhile a young talent discovered at the tournament is on the way to the national under 17 camp. The Special Assistant to the president on 2010 World Cup, Ambassador John Fashanu who graced the opening ceremony described the player as good for the national Team. Fashanu said he had recommended the player to national team coaches so as to be part of the FIFA under 17 world cup next month.

On his part the Coordinator of GRASOF south south, Ekpeyong expressed delight that a talent at the competition is getting national invitation.
