Wenger: England Vs Crotia pain remains

Arsène Wenger believes lingering memories of defeat two years ago will make Wednesday's match against Croatia a troublesome affair for England.

However the Frenchman feels World Cup qualification will be much simpler for his adopted country than his original country.

The Arsenal manager keeps a close eye on both nations, and knows that his compatriots have made a difficult task of booking their place in South Africa.

England missed out on qualification for Euro 2008 after a 3-2 defeat to Croatia at Wembley two years ago, but under new manager Fabio Capello have raced into a comfortable lead at the top of Group Six. A win this time will secure their place on the plane next year.

On the other hand, France find themselves four points behind group leaders Serbia. Should Les Bleus be defeated on Wednesday, the best they can do is a Play-Off berth.

And that, says the Gunners manager, is the significant difference between the two games on Wednesday night.

"England don't need 100 per cent to win, and they play at home," said Wenger speaking before the international break. "France have an urgent need to win, and play away in Belgrade.

"But let's not forget how painful that win for Croatia was at Wembley a few years ago. I'm sure that is still in the memory of everybody in England."
