Arsene Wenger Bemoans Lack Of Spark After Arsenal Defeat To Ipswich In League Cup Semi-Final

Boss still confident of progression in second leg.
Arsene Wenger bemoaned his side’s lack of sharpness as he saw his Arsenal side go down 1-0 to Championship side Ipswich in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

During the course of the game Arsenal managed just three shots on target as they often opted for the pass rather than the shot in an all-too-similar scenario.

Meanwhile, Ipswich defending resolutely and waited for chances on the counter attack, and finally hit the winner, after a fair few missed chances of their own, in the 78th minute when Tamas Priskin held off Johann Djourou to slot home.

“We had a lot of the ball but didn’t create many chances, Ipswich defended very well and we were caught on the counter attack they were looking for,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“Because we’ve played so many games we had no spark, Ipswich were sharper than us, at the end of the day we made a defensive mistake and they took advantage.”

Despite his disappointment, Wenger remained positive as he looks towards the second leg to right Wednesday night’s wrongs.

“We had a number of chances," he added. "We were certainly not sharp enough to win the game tonight, the good thing is that we play at home in the second leg and with that we can make a difference.

“I still feel confident of course and we won’t be lacking the creativity as we were tonight."
