Eternal Omnisport de Cotonou for opening match
A record fifty-four teams will vie for top honours at the third edition of Chief Godswill Akpabio National U-18 Boys Unity Cup Soccer Championship beginning in Uyo on September 19.
A statement by the South-South Co-ordinator of Grassroots Sports Federation, John Ekpenyong in Uyo during the week said of the fifty-four teams that have registered for the competition, four are from Ghana,Cameroon, Benin and Togo.
Ekpenyong disclosed that Eternal Omnisport de Cotonou of Benin will face defending champions,Treasure Island of Uyo in the opening match where the Head of Service in Akwa Ibom State will stand in for Governor Akpabio.
Meanwhile the five centres have been selected for the tournament are Uyo Sports Stadium, University of Uyo Mini-stadium, Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Four Towns, Uyo and Government Technical College, Ewet.
Comrade Ekpenyong who is also the chairman of the Local Organizing, assured that with the Co-operation of members of various committees, the 3rd edition of Chief Godswill Akpabio Under-18 Unity Cup will be the best youth tournament to be organized in the country.
He called on teams that have not yet registered to do so before the closing date (10th September,2009) as according to him, no late registration shall be entertained, Arrival, Accreditation and Screening is billed for 17th and 18th September,2009 respectfully as the opening ceremony kicks-off on the 19th September,2009 at Uyo Sports Stadium.
The tournament was instituted by Grassroots Sports Federation in 2007 in honour of Governor Godswill Akpabio and to also commemorate the creation of Akwa Ibom State.
