The Spurs boss maintains that his player is a decent lad, but has made a mistake.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that the club will take internal action against winger David Bentley, who was this week arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Redknapp was assertive in his declarations last season that alcohol had no part to play in the life of a professional footballer, after his defender Ledley King was embroiled in a drink-fuelled row with a night club doorman, and he maintained that stance today."There will be internal action of course," he told reporters at his Friday press conference.
"I'm anti-drinking to start with, and very, very anti-drinking and driving. There's no place for that. "He's very lucky that no one was injured in an accident. So he's got off quite lightly really. But David Bentley's a good lad. Honestly, he's a smashing lad.
"He's made a mistake. I've spoken to him this morning, and he realises he made a mistake and he'll pay for that. But nobody, I don't care what walk of life they're in, can drink and drive."Bentley, who has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, with Aston Villa apparently interested, will still be considered for selection by Redknapp, who nevertheless made it clear that drink-driving was something Spurs would not stand for.
"He's still here and he's available. He's trained well this morning," the Spurs gaffer continued."He's made a big mistake, and you can't be making too many mistakes like that because it'll cost him and it may cost somebody else as well if you're driving under the influence of drink."So it's not something we can stand for."
