Game of the weekend -Everton 1 Arsenal 6

There were no topsy-turvy contests on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season so Arsenal's demolition of Everton takes the honours. The Gunners were in irresistible form as they ruthlessly disposed of David Moyes' men - and in their own backyard. Denilson struck a superb opener while there were two well-taken goals by an inspirational Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal's ability to turn on the style has never been in doubt - it is their ability to grind out wins over lesser opposition that has hindered their recent league campaigns. But this devastating opening-day display has many wondering if this could finally be the year that Arsene Wenger's gifted youngsters blossom into genuine title contenders.

Player of the weekend -Cesc Fabregas
The Spanish midfielder provided another reminder of just how important he is to Arsenal with an inspirational performance. While many Arsenal players impressed, it was skipper Fabregas that stood out, not only pulling the strings in midfield but producing two neat finishes. The 22-year-old was sorely missed during his lengthy injury lay-off last season and it is crucial he stays fit if the Gunners are to challenge for this year's league title.

Goal of the weekend -Hugo Rodallega
Aston Villa have been tipped to challenge for a European place again this season and were expected to make a winning start at home to Wigan. But the Latics had other ideas and Hugo Rodallega stunned the home crowd with a fantastic opener. A long ball forward bounced kindly for the Colombian striker just outside the right side of the Villa box and he smashed a dipping volley over Brad Friedel and inside the far post. Jason Koumas later sealed a 2-0 win for the Latics.

Miss of the weekend -Robbie Keane
The former Liverpool striker would have been relieved to see Sebastien Bassong head a second-half winner for Tottenham after missing some gilt-edged chances in the first half. Luka Modric laid on the best one as he hooked the ball back in from the left and Keane - unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box - directed a diving header too close to Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina.

Save of the weekend -Marton Fulop
A debut goal by Darren Bent got Sunderland off to a flying start at Bolton but the Black Cats were indebted to goalkeeper Marton Fulop. The Hungarian made a string of saves to keep the Trotters at bay, the best an incredible reflex save just before the break. Matthew Taylor's inswinging corner was headed goalwards by Gary Cahill and Fulop somehow kept the ball out. Another fine save at the death secured a 1-0 win.

Moment of the weekend -Emmanuel Adebayor
Of all Manchester City's summer signings, it is Adebayor that came under most criticism. But the £25million man wasted little time showing he is determined to deliver the goods for City and lead the big-spending Blues into a new era. In just the third minute at Blackburn, Adebayor dispatched a clinical finish beyond Paul Robinson to round off a well-worked City break. His steely glare as he waited to be mobbed by his new team-mates was the look of a man who had proved his point. Stephen Ireland clinched a 2-0 win late on.

Reprieve of the weekend -Didier Drogba
Hull City looked set to hang on for a point at Stamford Bridge and deny Carlo Ancelotti a winning start as Chelsea boss. The Blues had been knocking at the door for most of the second half after Stephen Hunt's surprise opener was cancelled out by Drogba. And two minutes into stoppage time they finally got their noses in front. Drogba chipped it in from the left and Hull keeper Boaz Myhill was left clutching at thin air as the ball drifted over him and inside the far post. After breathing a huge sigh of relief, Drogba even admitted it was a cross - not a shot!
