Celtic boss refuses to blame ref
Manager Tony Mowbray conceded Celtic had been eliminated by the better side after the 5-1 aggregate loss to Arsenal in the Champions League play-off.
And Mowbray refused to criticise officials over a controversial award of a penalty in the 3-0 second leg defeat.
"The referee has given it. But, if the TV pictures show it should not have been given, so be it," said Mowbray of the penalty won and scored by Eduardo.
"Over the two legs, Arsenal had more quality and deserved to go through."
Artur Boruc appeared not to make contact with Eduardo in the run up to the penalty decision by referee Mejuto Gonzalez, with the Croatian striker converting in the 28th minute to open the scoring.
"All the boys thought there was no contact, but we have to accept it and move on."
Celtic defender Glenn Loovens added: "I was close enough to get a good view on it. It's disappointing when you concede a goal like that.
"You can see from the reaction of the boys, they were close to it.
"If it stays 0-0, you are in the game, but now we are 1-0 down and the game is over.
"The referee made the decision and he is not going to change it.
"It is very disappointing, but that is football. It is sad it happened to us and I do not think it is really fair, but it helped his team take the lead.
"There is a ref and a linesman to see those kind of things."
Emmanuel Eboue and substitute Andrey Arshavin put the Gunners into a 3-0 lead at the Emirates before Massimo volleyed a late consolation for the Scottish Premier League side.
"The first goal was always going to be crucial," said Mowbray. "If we had got it, you would have had a more interesting spectacle.
"The fact that Arsenal scored it allows their real high-quality players to relax a bit more and play at their own pace.
"When you try and play high up against such quality players, you are asking for trouble.
"That is the way it panned out - but I could not question the desire and effort of my team."
And Mowbray, whose side now drop into the group stages of the Europa League, expects Arsenal to mount a strong challenge to be crowned European champions this season.
"I would suggest there are only four teams in the English Premier League of the quality of Arsenal," he added.
"I do not think the gulf between our football club and the rest of the Premier League would be there - maybe we will get the chance to show that in the Europa League.
"I genuinely believe Arsenal are a team who can win this competition, but at the moment Celtic are not in a position to compete with the English sides who make the semi-finals of this tournament year in and year out.
"You have to take the positives out of the way we played in these two matches.
"Hopefully, we will be more than a match for whomever we draw now and I expect us to compete very well in the Europa League."

KALOU CONSIDERING OPTIONS
Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou is considering his options after being offered a new deal by the Stamford Bridge outfit.
The Ivory Coast international has just 12 months remaining on his current contract and the Blues are keen to extend his stay in West London.
Kalou, who joined the Blues from Feyenoord in the summer of 2006 for an undisclosed fee, has been an important member of the squad since his arrival.
He was handed a starting role ahead of Nicolas Anelka in the victory over Sunderland with new boss Carlo Ancelotti ready to rotate his options throughout the season.
The 23-year-old's agent Jan de Visser admitted his client is in no hurry to put pen to paper and will see how the campaign pans out first.
De Visser told the Daily Star Sunday: "We will see how his position is developed and take time to make a decision."

ANCELOTTI TO KEEP ON TINKERING
Carlo Ancelotti insists he will keep on tinkering with his Chelsea squad after watching them despatch west London neighbours Fulham 2-0 with consummate ease.
Chelsea made four changes from the side that defeated Sunderland last Tuesday but it made little difference to the cohesion as goals from Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka fired them to a 2-0 victory at Craven Cottage.
Ancelotti left midfielders Deco and Michael Essien on the bench along with centre-half Branislav Ivanovic and striker Salomon Kalou and promised that his rotation policy will continue.
"Deco was out and Essien was out for this game," said Ancelotti. "But it was a good line-up. Essien has played all the games so far, so I wanted to give him a rest.
"He will play the next game. We have to follow this line."
Ancelotti was also left drooling at the Drogba-Anelka combination in attack.
The pair were untouchable against the Cottagers even though Anelka was playing in behind lone striker Drogba instead of alongside him.
They both created goals for each other and Fulham had no answer to their power, pace and trickery.
"I am sure they can play together because they are fantastic strikers and have different qualities," said Ancelotti.
"For the first goal, Nicolas put a fantastic pass through for Didier and for the second goal, Didier put a fantastic pass through for Nicolas. They did a very good job together.
"Nicolas is a very complete striker. He can play in the centre and on the right and left, he can play behind the striker.
"Our idea today for Nicolas was that he would stay a little bit behind Didier. In the first-half he played a little bit on the right and our play was not so good but it improved in the second half because he took a position more in the centre."
Chelsea are now second in the Barclays Premier League with a 100% record from three games and Ancelotti admitted it had been the perfect start to his reign at Stamford Bridge.
"It is a great start," said Ancelotti. "We wanted to do this. It is a good moment for the team. We have to maintain this now.
"The players have a good motivation and no problems. It is very good.
"It is the first time we have not conceded and that is good. The defensive line played very well. They had very good concentration and movement. They played a fantastic match."
Fulham boss Roy Hodgson accepted that Chelsea had been the better side and revealed how Jonathan Greening's agent prevented him from signing in time to play any part in the game.
Greening has joined the club on a season-long loan from West Bromwich Albion but Hodgson said the deal was held-up for six hours while the player's agent waited for his own fee to be agreed.
Hodgson also hinted that his side looked tired after their midweek Europa League victory over Russian side Amkar Perm.
"We certainly played like we were tired," said Hodgson. "I thought our energy levels were low. We kept Chelsea at bay for long periods by keeping a decent shape but we never got close enough to disturb them as much as we would have liked to have done.
"In the end we lost and deservedly so. Looking at this game over 90 minutes I thought Chelsea deserved to win it. Both their goals came from clearances that bounced back to them.
"We didn't look like conceding a hatful of goals but on the other hand I didn't think we had anything near enough like the possession we would have needed to cause them more problems.
"They have the technique and pace to cause problems for the opposition and they caused problems for us today and we lost the game.
"They didn't pepper our goal with shots but they had control of the game after half-time and we didn't have enough in our locker."
As for Greening's situation, Hodgson added: "His agent took six hours to agree the agency fees so between 12.30 and 6.30pm, the agent was refusing to let him sign because his fee had not been agreed.
"When he eventually signed at 6.30pm it was an hour-and-a-half too late."

CELTIC DUO SIGN AT TOWN
Swindon have agreed deals to sign Celtic pair Ben Hutchinson and Simon Ferry on loan until January 1.
Striker Hutchinson, 21, arrived at Celtic Park from Middlesbrough in January 2008, where he had made nine first-team appearances, eight of which were in the Barclays Premier League.
His time in Glasgow has been spent mostly in the reserves as he also battled with injury, although he has a handful of SPL games under his belt and played a cameo role in the Hoops' Champions League draw against Manchester United last November.
Midfielder Ferry came up through the ranks at Celtic and was rewarded for his potential with a four-and-a-half year professional deal in January 2006.
The 21-year-old was somewhat of a regular on former boss Gordon Strachan's bench at the end of last season and also made a pre-season outing in the Wembley Cup this summer.
FA TO REFER CHELSEA BRAWL TO UAE
The Football Association are expected to make contact with their United Arab Emirates counterparts when the investigation is concluded into Chelsea's training ground brawl with Al-Ahli.
The practice match last week between a Chelsea reserve team and the UAE side was abandoned in the first half following the violence at the Barclays Premier League side's Cobham base in Surrey.
The referee's report, which has been filed to the FA, is understood to point the finger at Al-Ahli players being the instigators.
FA officials are still gathering details of the match and they will send their findings to the UAE and they expect action against players guilty of wrongdoing.
Chelsea's players were reportedly assaulted with karate kicks, knee-high tackles and had their hair pulled out and eyes gouged.
The Chelsea side included some of the players on the fringe of the first-team squad, including goalkeeper Rhys Taylor, defender Jeffrey Bruma, Carl Magnay, Gael Kakuta and defender Jack Cork, now on loan at Coventry.
Cork was reported to have been repeatedly hit while in a headlock and an opponent is said to have poked his fingers up the nose of Kakuta.
The fracas was captured by Chelsea's TV channel but the club have since removed all references to the game from its official website.

ANELKA AT HOME WITH BLUES
Striker Nicolas Anelka insists he is so happy at Chelsea that he wants to sign a new long-term contract with the club.
Anelka also made it clear he was happy with coach Carlo Ancelotti's rotation policy after helping Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over west London neighbours Fulham.
Anelka returned to the starting line-up against the Cottagers after being relegated to the bench for Tuesday's 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Anelka and strike partner Didier Drogba both made goals for each other as the Blues achieved three wins out of three under their new Italian coach.
But despite their success against Fulham, Anelka will not be stamping his feet should Ancelotti decide to leave him out against Burnley next Saturday and the striker is so settled that he is already looking to sign a new contract.
When asked it he was surprised to be on the bench against Sunderland after helping Chelsea win their opening fixture 2-1 against Hull, Anelka replied: "No, the manager said sometimes he will rest some people, so I rested.
"In the week some people rested and we won, and against Fulham some people rested and we won. That's important because it's a long season and we need everybody in the squad.
"The most important thing is to win with Chelsea. Of course everyone wants to play every game, but the manager said in some games he will change the players and get some people to rest and we have to accept it."
Anelka is also hoping to put pen to paper on a new contract extension with the Blues.
The striker's future had been the subject of speculation during the summer but the France international has clear plans to stay at Stamford Bridge.
"I'm really glad to play and score goals for Chelsea and I hope I will be here for many more seasons," said Anelka.
"I was saying I wanted to be at a big club and I am at a big club, Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world so I'm very happy.
"I want to be here, I like to play with big players and I like to try to win everything. I would be pleased to sign for many years. We will see what happens.
"I am at a big club now in Chelsea and things are going well, so there's no need to move anymore. I want to help my club and I'm happy to be here."
Anelka's partnership with Drogba is also flourishing and the Frenchman warned the rest of the defenders in the Premier League that it is likely to get even better.
"We want to play together and we are just happy to be on the pitch together," said Anelka. "I want him to score and he wants me to score. I think we showed that against Fulham.
"When I get the ball I try to look for him, and when he's got the ball he tries and looks for me, so it's easier to score goals with that.
"But the more time we spend on the pitch playing together then the understanding gets better, and I think we will score more goals."
Fulham defender John Pantsil hopes they can put their Chelsea disappointment behind them by going to Russia and finishing off Amkar Perm on their plastic pitch in the Europa Cup on Thursday.
Fulham won the first leg 3-1 at home but now have to travel to Russia without injured striker Andrew Johnson and with fresh doubts over the fitness of midfielder Danny Murphy - substituted against Chelsea with a calf problem.
"Chelsea was a very tough game," said Pantsil. "We respect them and they gave a good account of themselves.
"It was a good test for all the Fulham players as well. They played well, but we have to put it behind us and look forward to the rest of our games.
"We've worked hard for this (Europe) and now it's time for us to go out there and deliver because they (Amkar Perm) are a very good team.
"It will be my first time on a plastic pitch. It will be difficult but if we want to get into the group stages we have to forget about the pitch and just play well."

ANCELOTTI: THIS TEAM CAN CONQUER EUROPE
Carlo Ancelotti insists Chelsea can win the Champions League with the squad he inherited from Guus Hiddink.
The Italian coach revealed that he and the Blues board believe they can achieve success with the current group of players at his disposal.
Chelsea have made just four signings this summer but are yet to land a superstar player.
Ancelotti insists the cash is there should he want to bolster his squad with a big-money signing but has 'closed the book' for now.
However, he is adamant the quality in Chelsea's squad is sufficient for them to go one step further than last season's semi-final and even go on to win the Champions League.
"The book is closed," said Ancelotti. "We have to wait one week for the end of the window, but the book is closed now.
"When I arrived in Chelsea we worked together and we took a decision together. We are not interested in players because we always thought we had a very good team.
"I am the coach and I have responsibility for the technical area and the club gave me a very good team, very good players and we didn't need other players. If we took a decision to take another player, the club was ready to put money up.
"I want to say that the club have supported me and if I wanted to take other players, there was not a problem for sure. But we want to take a player we need. This is a very competitive squad in all positions of the pitch.
"Chelsea didn't win the Champions League but they were close to winning with these players and I think with these players we can win.
"If we can manage to take a little step, we can win with the same players. To win the Champions League you have to pay attention to details and have some luck.
"I am happy to train with Chelsea. Milan was a great squad, and Chelsea is the same. There is a different quality of players but the mental attitude is the same.
"I will give 100 per cent to do my best for the players and the team. I think that to take a little step we have put our quality on the pitch in every game. I liked Chelsea's play last season but I want to do a little bit different this year."
Ancelotti has made a winning start to his Chelsea career with victories over Hull and Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League.
The Blues face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday in what will be Ancelotti's first taste of a London derby, and he has been boosted by the rejuvenation of Portugal midfielder Deco - a midfielder who looked set for the exit door this summer after an injury-plagued first season at Stamford Bridge.
Ancelotti said: "For us he is a very important player because he has good quality in midfield and he is happy.
"Now he is not injured. He has good motivation and worked hard.
"He didn't play so much because with a player over 30 you have to take the right control in order for him to stay fit. We want to maintain the situation for a long time.
"I think he is one of the most exciting players to watch in the Barclays Premier League. He takes the right decision always."
Meanwhile Frank Lampard has revealed how he takes strength from the memory of his late mother Pat.
Lampard became Chelsea's joint fifth highest goalscorer when he scored a penalty in the 3-1 win over Sunderland on Tuesday night.
It brought him level with the legendary Jimmy Greaves and Lampard revealed that his goal celebration, arms and eyes raised upwards to the heavens, was a dedication to his mother who passed away last year.
"It is always a gesture to my mum," Lampard told BBC's 'Football Focus' programme. "She is always there for me and I think she gives me that little edge.
"Football can sometimes be a way out for me, a relief. Other people go through the same sort of thing and you have to carry on with your life, but I take very much strength from her memory.
"She is with me all the time. That, in a way, can give you a bit of strength to carry on as well."

UNITED FEARED IN EUROPE - BERBATOV
Dimitar Berbatov insists the rest of Europe will be fearing Manchester United when the draw for the group stage of the Champions League takes place in Monaco on Thursday at 1700 BST.
United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are all guaranteed positions among the eight top seeds - meaning they will avoid current European champions Barcelona but could face Cristiano Ronaldo and his fellow galacticos at Real Madrid, who are one of the eight second-ranked clubs.
Berbatov told his club's official website: "When you say the name Manchester United it inspires respect in a lot of people. Nobody will fancy playing us."
Berbatov said the taste of defeat in Rome has intensified the United players' desire to go one better this time.
"After what happened in last year's final, I think we're even more determined in Europe this time around," he added.
"For me, losing in Rome was doubly frustrating because I wasn't at the club when the team won in Moscow - I've never won the Champions League, so losing to Barcelona was very upsetting.
"This year our aim is to make it all the way to Madrid. The Bernabeu is one of the best stadiums in the world - and I know we're good enough to make it back there and, this time, win it."
There is also another intriguing possibility of Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea coming face to face with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan in a group - Inter will also be among the second seeds.
The draw will see 32 teams split into eight groups - each containing a top seed, a second seed, a third seed and a fourth seed.
Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Sevilla are other top seeds - and there are plenty of tough opponents in the other pots. Lyon, CSKA Moscow and Juventus are among the second seeds - while Atletico Madrid, Bordeaux and Stuttgart are in the third pot.
Rangers are also among the second seeds thanks to Fiorentina's away-goals triumph over Sporting Lisbon last night. If the result had been reversed, the Scottish champions would be third seeds.
The team to avoid among the eight clubs in the fourth pot are Wolfsburg, who were champions of Germany last season.
Big-spending Real Madrid are the bookies' favourites and will view this year's tournament as almost a must-win - because, apart from the arrival of Ronaldo, Kaka and Xavi Alonso, the final in May will be at their home ground the Bernabeu.
You can follow the Champions League draw live at b2worldsoccernews.blogspot.com from 1700 BST. Seedings for the draw:
Top seeds: Barcelona (Spa) UEFA co-efficient 121.9, Chelsea (Eng) 118.9, Liverpool (Eng) 118.9, Man Utd (Eng) 111.9, AC Milan (Ita) 110.6, Arsenal (Eng) 106.9, Sevilla (Spa) 100.9, Bayern Munich (Ger) 98.3.
Second seeds: Lyon (Fra) 91.0, Inter Milan (Ita) 87.6, Real Madrid (Spa) 78.9, CSKA Moscow (Rus) 71.5, Porto (Por) 68.3, AZ Alkmaar (Hol) 64.8, Juventus (Ita) 63.5, Rangers (Sco) 56.6.
Third seeds: Olympiakos (Gre) 52.6, Marseille (Fra) 48.0, Dinamo Kiev (Ukr) 46.4, Stuttgart (Ger) 45.3, Fiorentina (Ita) 42.6, Atletico Madrid (Spa) 41.9, Bordeaux (Fra) 40.0, Besiktas (Tur) 32.4.
Fourth seeds: Wolfsburg (Ger) 21.3, Standard Liege (Bel) 21.1, Maccabi Haifa (Isr) 17.1, FC Zurich (Swi) 14.1, Rubin Kazan (Rus) 9.5, Unirea Urziceni (Rom) 8.8, APOEL Nicosia (Cyp) 4.0, Debreceni (Hun) 1.633.

UEFA REVIEW EDUARDO INCIDENT
Arsenal striker Eduardo could face a two-match Champions League ban if UEFA decide to charge him with diving.
UEFA disciplinary officials are reviewing the incident when the Croatia striker won a penalty against Celtic on Wednesday night before deciding whether he will be charged.
A UEFA spokesman said: "We are reviewing the match to see whether a disciplinary investigation should be launched."
Under UEFA rules, if charged and found guilty Eduardo could face sanctions up to a two-match ban in European competition.
Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith has called for Eduardo to face action and UEFA president Michel Platini confirmed he could be suspended.
Platini, speaking in Monaco, said: "There are disciplinary procedures at UEFA and the procedure could be taken to suspend the player.
"Scotland often start such procedures, last time it was a Lithuania player who was sanctioned."
Platini said his plan of having two additional assistant referees, one behind each goal-line, would cut down on diving. The scheme is being trialled in this season's Europa League.
He added: "One day players will give up simulating because referees will see them. For years players have cheated because the referees were not of a good enough quality.
"I am convinced if you have referees close by that will prevent players from simulating and players will take the right decision. I have always said better to have more referees than a multiplication of disciplinary procedures."
SFA chief Smith wants UEFA to act retrospectively to punish Eduardo in the same way they dealt with Lithuania striker Saulius Mikoliunas, who cheated to earn a spot-kick against Scotland at Hampden Park in September 2007.
Video evidence was used to sanction Mikoliunas, who was banned for two matches. Smith said: "Eduardo is a terrific player who has battled back from a serious injury to resume playing at the highest level.
"However, last night he showed disrespect to the game by his actions in winning a penalty against Celtic.
"Since I came into this post, I have raised the issue of simulation time and time again - both here in Scotland and with FIFA and UEFA.
"I don't think that I have received enough support in my efforts to eradicate what I believe to be one of the most serious threats to the integrity of football. Last night showed exactly why we must take this issue seriously.
"We have shown the courage to use retrospective punishment when it comes to simulation and I would urge UEFA to do so in this instance. Everything that can be done to stamp it out must be done - starting right now.
"Last night's incident also brings the whole issue of video evidence to the fore.
"I see absolutely no reason at all why we cannot use technology to assist referees - particularly in live games.
"I know that some people say that TV evidence would damage the flow of a game, but I believe the proposal that I put forward to both FIFA and UEFA whereby football would adopt a similar approach to tennis in offering a set number of challenges can work."
Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati also called for Eduardo to be banned. "If it is clear on TV then UEFA must act against Eduardo and ban him," said Donati.
"I think he should get a two-match ban because it wasn't a penalty. I told him that and everyone in the Celtic team told him that."
Wednesday night's game was still 0-0 at the time, though Arsenal held a 2-0 advantage from the first leg. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger acknowledged Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc did not bring down Eduardo in the penalty incident but claimed his forward was taking evasive action.

Donati demands Eduardo ban
eltic midfielder Massimo Donati feels that Arsenal striker Eduardo should be banned for diving in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
Eduardo appeared to throw himself to the ground to win a penalty in the Gunners' 3-1 second-leg win at Emirates Stadium.
Donati believes Eduardo should be treated the same way as Lithuania striker Saulius Mikoliunas, who earned a spot-kick against Scotland at Hampden Park in September 2007.
Video evidence was used by Uefa to punish Mikoliunas, who was given a two-match ban.
"If it is clear on TV then Uefa must act against Eduardo and ban him," said Donati, who has been linked with a move to Bari.

The game was still 0-0 at the time, though Arsenal held a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger acknowledged Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc did not bring down Eduardo in the penalty incident but claimed his forward was taking evasive action.
Celtic defender Glenn Loovens was in no doubt Eduardo had dived.
"I don't think he even speaks English so there was no point talking to him," Loovens added.
"It is very disappointing but that is football. It's sad it happened to us.
"I don't think it is really fair. But it helped his team take the lead.
"There is a referee and a linesman to see those kind of things."

Shittu eyes Bolton exit
Shittu is keen to be playing regularly this season as he looks to safeguard his place in the Nigeria squad ahead of next summer's World Cup finals.
The signing of Zat Knight has pushed Shittu further down the pecking order at the Reebok Stadium and Trotters boss Gary Megson has admitted he is open to offers for the powerful defender.
Portsmouth are believed to be keen on signing the former QPR and Watford man, while Birmingham, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest have all been credited with an interest in the pacey central defender.
Shittu's agent, Rachel Anderson, has confirmed the 28-year-old is weighing up his options and is interested in a move so that he can be playing regular first team football.
"Bolton have agreed they will listen to offers for Danny and we are considering them now," Anderson told skysports.com.
"Danny is keen to be playing on a regular basis and he will weigh up all offers that come his way.
"There has been a great deal of interest in Danny as he has a lot of experience and talent and hopefully we will resolve his future soon."

Wenger ready for 'big test'
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is eagerly anticipating his side's 'first big test' of the season when they head to Manchester United on Saturday.
The club's attention now turns to the weekend as they look to maintain their 100 per cent start to the new Premier League season.
Wenger believes his side will travel to Old Trafford full of confidence having recorded a comfortable win over SPL giants Celtic.
"I am happy to go to Old Trafford because it is the first big, big test," he said. "You want always to have a high level of confidence when you go to Old Trafford, we have that at the moment.
"We are now in the top, top league in Europe, with all the big names. Our team against Celtic was an average age of 23.9 years.
"That means, if we can get out of the group stage, then in six months we can be even stronger.
"That is what we want to focus on, to continue to improve our team play, the speed of our game and show that we have made big improvements come Saturday at 5.15pm.
He added: "For us it is most important to recover physically because Manchester United did not play during the week."
Chimbonda in Rovers medical
Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda is undergoing a medical at Blackburn ahead of his proposed switch to Ewood Park.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp confirmed on Wednesday night a fee had been agreed both clubs as revealed on skysports.com for the French international.
Chimbonda has decided to leave White Hart Lane after failing to hold down a regular place in the side under Redknapp following his return to the club from Sunderland in the January transfer window.
Blackburn boss Sam Allarydce is keen to tie up a deal for Chimbonda as he looks to bolster his defensive options and the full-back is currently in talks with Rovers officials.
Chimbonda's agent, Willie McKay, has confirmed talks are underway over a three-year deal and the full-back is set to have his medical later on Thursday.
"Pascal is having his medical this afternoon and we expect everything to go successfully," McKay told skysports.com.
"Talks are underway and Blackburn are offering Pascal a three-year deal with an option and we are hopeful of getting everything done very soon."

SFAchief calls for Eduardo ban
Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith has called on Uefa to punish Arsenal striker Eduardo for diving in the UEFA Champions League clash with Celtic.
Eduardo infuriated Celtic's players after he appeared to throw himself to the ground to win a penalty in the Gunners' 3-1 second-leg win at Emirates Stadium.
Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati, who scored Celtic's consolation on Wednesday night, feels Eduardo deserves to be banned for his actions and Smith wants Uefa to take action against the Croatia international by reviewing video evidence of the incident.
He said: "Eduardo is a terrific player who has battled back from a serious injury to resume playing at the highest level.

"However, last night he showed disrespect to the game by his actions in winning a penalty against Celtic.

"We need a serious debate on these issues. Everyone in football has a responsibility to set the right example to our youngsters.
"We can talk all we want about Fair Play campaigns, but taking action would be a much more powerful deterrent and would send the right message to players everywhere."

Wenger - Eboue’s Arsenal ‘turning point’
Arsène Wenger has identified the “turning point” in Emmanuel Eboue’s Arsenal career.
The Ivorian capped a faultless display in Arsenal’s 3-1 Play-off Round second-leg victory against Celtic with a fine turn and finish after 53 minutes.
The performance, and resulting adulation from the Emirates Stadium faithful, is a far cry from last season when Eboue came under criticism from certain sections of the crowd during Arsenal’s clash with Wigan in December.
Two months later when the Gunners faced Tottenham at White Hart Lane, the Ivorian was dismissed for two bookable offences.
Speaking after Wednesday’s win, Wenger ear-marked that North London derby as the beginning of a “very uncertain time” for the midfielder. But, now back to his best, the manager believes that the 26-year-old has become a stronger person.
“Eboue is a guy who needs to be loved,” Wenger explained at his post-match press conference.
“There was a turning point after he was sent off last year at Tottenham where for a while it was very uncertain for him. It was a difficult season. But he has not talked, he has worked and he has talent.
“I believe he has matured as well, because what has happened to him has made him stronger.
“You have to deal with that or give in.”
'We got no Euro recognition,' says Wenger
Arsenal were not given the credit they deserved for reaching last season’s Champions League Semi-Final, according to Arsène Wenger.
The Gunners were just one win away from the Final in May having knocked out the likes of Roma and Villarreal in the latter stages. They were eventually well beaten by Premier League champions Manchester United in the last four. However the Arsenal manager says their achievements were overlooked because of the recent success of English clubs in Europe.
“We were not given any credit at all for reaching the Semi-Finals last season,” explained Wenger.
“It was for two reasons. First of all it looks like at least one or two English clubs always reach the Semi-Finals so it doesn't seem like a major achievement anymore.
“Secondly, we lost in a non-convincing way against Manchester United and that took credit away from us. For me we knocked out good teams. But it's like that. You have to accept it.”
Wenger: Walcott England role is unrealistic
Arsène Wenger does not expect Theo Walcott to report for international duty next week because of his ongoing back problem.
The rapid winger did not feature during the Gunners’ pre-season campaign until he completed 45 minutes against Valencia on August 8.
That outing was enough to earn Walcott a call-up to Fabio Capello’s squad for England’s clash with Holland three days later. However, the back injury put paid to any involvement against the Dutch.
The 20-year-old has now missed his side’s first three games of the new season and will not face Celtic or Manchester United this week.
Because of this obvious lack of match-time, Wenger can see no reason for Capello to risk him against Slovenia or Croatia.
“England? No,” he said at Tuesday’s press conference. “There is no way.
“I can't see a player who has played one half since May going in to vital games for England. It would not be realistic.
“There is still an inflammation of his back. The scan was fine; he has no hernia but he has pain. He is out of the Manchester United game.
“If he doesn't play against United how can he play for England? His last game was in June. We are now in August. We wait until he has no pain.”
Wenger also rejected claims that the midfielder’s injury has become a “mystery” but he did admit that the problem might be related to Walcott’s recent shoulder operation.
“It’s not a mystery because he hurt his back with the wrong movement in Valencia,” said the manager.
“It’s difficult to say, he had surgery on both shoulders, his shoulders are less flexible, I don’t know. He’s injured and nobody can tell you where that injury comes from.”

WENGER PREPARED TO CHANGE
Arsene Wenger intends to stick with his fluid 4-3-3 formation which has underpinned Arsenal's impressive start to the new campaign - but maintains he has the personnel to switch things around should the going get tough.
Captain Cesc Fabregas is a major doubt for the second leg of the Champions League qualifier against Celtic at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night - when the Gunners will defend a 2-0 lead - because of a hamstring problem, meaning Wenger is likely to have to rethink his tactics.
Alex Song, rested to the bench against Portsmouth, and Brazilian youngster Denilson offer plenty of defensive cover for a midfield trio, while Wales international Aaron Ramsey could be handed the playmaker role after scoring his first Barclays Premier League goal when a second-half substitute for Fabregas.
Abou Diaby presents another option, having staked his claim for a place in the starting XI by bagging a brace in the 4-1 demolition of sorry Pompey.
After watching his side open the campaign with a 6-1 romp at Everton before winning in Glasgow, Wenger concedes, at the moment, there seems little reason to tinker.
"We have played a 4-3-3 formation early in the season and there are many benefits from it," said the Arsenal manager.
"But it is not a definite system - it can change in some games and I might move to a 4-4-2.
"At the start of the season, I wanted to play high up the pitch, making a threat in the opponents half early in the game.
"We like to do that, because we are an attacking team and it gives us the opportunity to use our character."
Arsenal may have now bagged 12 goals from three games, but only one of those has come from a striker - Eduardo netting up at Goodison Park.
Wenger, though, is not overly concerned, having seen centre-back William Gallas take his personal tally to three with another somewhat fortunate effort against Pompey.
"It tells me that we have a game where we attack from everywhere," the Arsenal manager observed.
"Our strikers at the moment are providers.
"For me, in a good team everybody can score and a good striker scores and provides.
"At the moment they provide more than they score, but I know that Eduardo and Robin van Persie will score so I am very happy that at the moment they do not score and we still score goals."
With such an abundance of riches in attack, especially when you consider the likes of England forward Theo Walcott, Czech international Tomas Rosicky and France winger Samir Nasri are all not yet match fit, Wenger admits should he dip into the transfer market again before the window closes, it would be for defensive cover.
A swoop for Fulham's Norway centre-half Brede Hangeland, though, appears to have been ruled out, but reports linking former skipper Patrick Vieira with a return continue to surface, while the future of centre-back Philippe Senderos, who was in talks with Everton, remains unclear.
Wenger is keeping an "open eye" on the situation ahead of the September 1 deadline.
"We are not desperate because if you look at the players who are out and those who are available, it shows that we have a big squad," he said.
"Maybe in the defensive area we could still do something, but everybody looks at basically the same places."
ARSHAVIN: GUNNERS HAVE TO BUY
Andrey Arshavin believes Arsenal must raid the transfer market to add depth and quality to their squad.
The Russia forward has suggested Arsene Wenger's current pool of players is too small, when compared to Arsenal's trophy rivals.
And although Arshavin recognised Everton's achievements of finishing fifth in the Barclays Premier League with a small squad last season, he claims Arsenal should not be looking to directly follow their example.
Arshavin told the Sunday Times: "We still have to buy. That's my opinion.
"We shouldn't set Everton as a benchmark, we should be looking at the top teams of Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona.
"We should buy first-class players, regardless of their age. We should buy the ones who should improve our game. The top teams have much bigger squads than ours and that is why we have to buy."
SYLVINHO SEALS CITY MOVE
Veteran Brazilian defender Sylvinho has joined Manchester City on a one-year contract.
The former Arsenal star was released by Barcelona at the end of last season and passed a medical this afternoon to become the seventh new arrival at Eastlands.
The former Arsenal star was released by Barcelona at the end of last season and passed a medical this afternoon to become the seventh new arrival at Eastlands.
Now 35, Sylvinho will provide cover for Wayne Bridge at left-back.
Twice a Champions League winner, Sylvinho completed the full 90 minutes of last May's triumph over Manchester United in Rome.
During his time at the Nou Camp, he also picked up three La Liga medals in addition to the six caps he earned for his country.
City boss Mark Hughes is hoping international clearance is received in time for Sylvinho to be considered for the Carling Cup second-round tie at Crystal Palace on Thursday.
"Sylvinho has a wealth of experience at the very top level, having represented Brazil and played for some of the very top clubs in Europe,"
"When the chance presented itself to bring him to Manchester City as a free agent I saw it as representing excellent business for us.
"Sylvinho won the European Cup last season at Barcelona and he will strengthen our defensive options."

Everton will spend some of the cash from Joleon Lescott's sale to Manchester City on Russian winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.
A delegation from Goodison Park is expected to fly to Hamburg in the next 24 hours to conduct a medical on the Locomotiv Moscow left winger who is likely to cost boss David Moyes close to £9million.
The 24-year-old will need a work permit, but with him being a regular in the Russia side, that is unlikely to be a problem.
Holding the medical in Hamburg will also speed up the move ahead of next week's deadline because Bilyaletdinov does not have a visa as yet to enter the UK.
Lescott was in Manchester today completing his own medical which will trigger an end to the summer-long saga over his transfer to Eastlands.
Everton will get £22million, rising to £24million with various add-ons, and that gives Moyes just a week to do his own transfer business.
Everton acquired a work permit on Friday for Valencia's Argentina international midfielder Ever Banega, who has been on loan at Atletico Madrid.
But there is still some confusion over that deal, with Valencia and the player's agent insisting they are not in negotiations with the Merseysiders.
Moyes, who claims he wants four new faces in his squad before the transfer window shuts, is aiming to buy two defenders.
He has been linked with Stoke's Ryan Shawcross, Middlesbrough pair David Wheater and Robert Huth, Bolton's Gary Cahill and Arsenal's Philippe Senderos.
It was claimed that Everton were also in contact last week over Stephen Taylor's availability.
But Bilyaletdinov could be the first arrival, the 6ft 1in player having appeared 28 times for his country.
Moyes, though, will have to select from his current players for Thursday's Europa League play-off second leg away to Sigma Olomouc.
The 4-0 first leg victory over the Czech side is Everton's only win of the season having lost 1-0 on Sunday at Burnley to add to the opening day 6-1 defeat by Arsenal.

FERGIE IS SCARED OF CITY TEVEZ
Carlos Tevez believes Sir Alex Ferguson is worried about Manchester City following their busy summer of spending.
Tevez spent two years on loan at Old Trafford before securing a permanent switch to Eastlands over the summer.
Ferguson has played down the significance of the Argentine's departure, whilst also warning Man City that it will be difficult to break into the top four this season.
However, Tevez feels Ferguson does fear his local rivals and will not be relishing the Manchester derby on September 20.
"Ferguson is history for me but I know that he is scared of playing against us," the striker told Globoesporte.
"It's dangerous for Ferguson's objectives and for him to criticise Manchester City."
Tevez has also explained the differences between playing under Ferguson and working with current manager Mark Hughes.
"Mark Hughes is only focused on his work and the team, he doesn't get involved in the negotiations," he said.
"He has been a football player so there is a big difference in the way he treats each player."

LESCOTT PASSES CITY MEDICAL
Joleon Lescott has passed a medical ahead of his proposed £24million move to Manchester City, according to reports.
The England international is now set to put the finishing touches to his big-money switch from Everton.
The Toffees accepted a bid from their Premier League rivals on Sunday and City have wasted no time in pushing the deal through.
Lescott travelled to Manchester on Monday, took in a short visit to Eastlands, before heading off for a physical examination.
Having satisfied City's medical team he is now in a position to sign a contract with the Blues, according to Sky Sports News.
The 27-year-old will move to Eastlands after three successful years at Goodison Park, in which he established himself as a highly-regarded top-flight performer and forced his way into the England fold.
Mourinho: A 'Crazy' Match With Almost A Goal A Minute
The Nerazzurri gaffer reckons there could have been 90 goals notched up during after his side's opening-round draw.
It wasn't the start that Jose Mourinho and Inter had in mind: a 1-1 draw with newly promoted Bari. And speaking to Sky after the match, the 'Special One' said that his side lacked the ability to play together, and for one another."We have made a total change in our playing structure," Mourinho said. "We have not worked out our best formation yet."
"Bari played a very good game and deserved a point - which is in fact what happened - but I expected more from my team."Mourinho made the comment during the week that he was expecting a well-organised Bari squad to come out and play against his side.
"We saw a crazy match out there today, with both teams having the ability to score a goal almost every minute," he said."In the first half, we played a diamond formation, but there was no space to play our strikers. But then, with our wingers in the second half, we played well
Mourinho says that his team cannot rest on their laurels, and need to go for the killer blow when they hit the lead in a game."The team is motivated, but when we have a 1-0 lead, we need to go for a 2-0 one, because we don't have the mental ability to defend," he said.
"I do not look for excuses, but we still have a lot to work on, and towards."The former Porto and Chelsea coach will need to get his team into shape quickly, as Inter take on city-rivals Milan next week.
Chelsea Captain Terry Salutes Didier Drogba & Nicolas Anelka
Terry eyes more goals from the Blues' front line pairing.
Chelsea captain John Terry has praised the Blues' striker partnership of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka. The pair appear to be blossoming together in the starting line-up, both scoring in the Pensioners' 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
The defender was complimentary of the entire team's performance, but singled out the forwards for particular accolades."We look sharp, we're scoring goals and the two lads up front looked fantastic today," Terry told Sky Sports News after the game.
"Long may that continue."A lot has been made of the partnership between Drogba and Anelka in the past, with many believing the duo may be too similar to play alongside each other. However, temporary boss Guus Hiddink regularly started with both men, and it seems that new manager Carlo Ancelotti is prepared to follow suit.
Drogba sung the praises of Anelka after his goal at Fulham and is looking forward to a fruitful relationship with the Frenchman.
Vela ruled out for a month with ankle injury
Carlos Vela has been ruled out for a month with an ankle injury.
The Mexican forward did not play for Arsenal in pre-season after fulfilling international commitments early in the summer. He last played on August 12, coming off the bench to help his country defeat the United States in a vital World Cup qualifier.
But Vela returned to England with an injury and is not expected to be fit until September. “Carlos Vela has an ankle injury,” confirmed Wenger at his pre-match press conference. “He was injected [on international duty] in Mexico and came back injured. That’s one of the problems you have with international football.
“To be completely cured he will need one month.” Vela joins Theo Walcott (back), Tomas Rosicky (hamstring), Samir Nasri (broken leg), Johan Djourou (knee) and Lukasz Fabianski (knee) on the sidelines.

Wenger - We are not signing Hangeland
Arsène Wenger will not be signing Brede Hangeland.
Earlier this summer, the manager expressed an interest in the Norwegian captain but did not make an offer to Fulham for his services.
And during Friday’s press conference, when asked about the possibility of signing Hangeland, Wenger put an end to the speculation. “No we are not on this [Hangeland] case,” the manager said.

Wenger - Fans are now in tune with Song
According to Arsène Wenger, the “opinions are changing” about Alex Song.
After making only 20 starts during his first three years at the Club, the 21-year-old established himself as a key member of Wenger’s squad last season, making 48 appearances in all competitions.
Although the manager initially thought Song would be a central defender, the Cameroonian has emerged as a genuine midfield enforcer - the perfect foil for Cesc Fabregas in the Arsenal engine room.
Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, the manager hailed Song’s continued development at the Club in sometimes difficult circumstances.
“I was always confident Song would pop up in this [central midfield] position, or at centre-back,” the manager said.
“I brought him here aged 17 and worked very hard with him, we worked hard because I felt he had the talent to become a good player.
“I know that the opinions are changing about him now.
“He had to swim a little bit against the stream, and he did that very well.”
Match Report:Arsenal 4 Portsmouth 1
Abou Diaby struck twice as Arsenal maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with an emphatic 4-1 win over Portsmouth at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
The Frenchman sidefooted in after 18 minutes and swept home another soon afterwards as Arsène Wenger’s side produced some sublime football in the first half.
They were pegged back by a header from Younes Kaboul just before the interval but a freak goal from William Gallas, his third in three games this term, and fourth from substitute Aaron Ramsey completed a satisfying afternoon for Arsène Wenger.
On paper this was the ‘gimme’ of Arsenal's teak-tough start to the 2009-10 campaign and, in fairness, the home side were always in control. But had they been off-par then an energetic, dogged Portsmouth outfit may have pushed them all the way.
However it never came to that; this was Diaby’s and Arsenal’s day. They completed the task with diligence and bought their goal tally to 12 goals in three games.
If they can see off Celtic on Wednesday in similar fashion then Wenger’s men can look forward to greater challenges ahead this season with real confidence.
The main news before kick-off was all about Eduardo. The Croatian had featured in four games last season and cameoed at Everton last weekend but this was his first Premier League start since that fateful day at Birmingham on February 23, 2008. The 26-year-old took up a role on the left side of the front three. Robin van Persie replaced Nicklas Bendtner at the pinnacle and Andrey Arshavin was on the right.
There were three further changes from the midweek win at Celtic. Emmanuel Eboue, Kieran Gibbs and Diaby came in for Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Alex Song respectively.
As usual, Portsmouth were backed by their boisterous, bell-ringing supporters. However their Club were perceived to be tethered by takeover talks and in real danger of relegation. Their early season performances had not really backed up that notion but they could surely do without facing a rampant Arsenal this afternoon. But then who could?
Eight goals and two stirring wins were celebrated with 60,000 twirling scarves before kick-off. The Club had arranged for one to be left on every seat and the supporters waved them with gusto as their side came out. The home team soon adjusted their play to the party atmosphere.
In the opening seconds, Diaby found a fraction of space on the right only to dally and allow the recovering Nadir Belhadj to deflect the ball over the bar.
It was the sign of things to come in the first 15 minutes – incessant Arsenal pressure but without real focus. Arshavin rolled a shot wide in the ninth minute and the home side forced a flurry of corners but David James should have been called into greater action before Arsenal took the lead in the 18th minute.
Eduardo collected the ball on the left, nudged it one side of Marc Wilson then cheekily raced around the other side to collect near the byline. The striker steadied himself before rolling a pass into the path of the onrushing Diaby, who sidefooted a powerful shot into the roof of the net. It was inventive, incisive Arsenal at their best.
And there was more to come. Within a couple of minutes it was 2-0 thanks to a classic counter-attack. Portsmouth had a free-kick that was headed clear by Diaby. He then roared forward as Arsenal broke and, by the time Fabregas had clipped a pass to Eboue on the right who squared the ball into the area, the Frenchman was on the penalty spot and able to sweep home a second.
Simple but brilliant football.
Arsenal were now threatening goals with every attack. A combination of Denilson and Fabregas somehow missed a low Fabregas cross in the following minutes. After that Arshavin nearly wriggled through, Van Persie produced an airshot when well-placed and Diaby tried his luck from distance.
On the half-hour, Kanu set up John Utaka at the near post but his shot was blocked by Eboue. However Arsenal were looking irresistible this afternoon and Van Persie replied with a deft control outside the area followed by a cute, curling shot that required all of James’ massive frame to tip the ball away.
The England keeper was similarly stretched in the 36th minute when Van Persie’s free-kick deflected off the wall and seemed destined for the top corner.
It was not exactly one-way traffic. Portsmouth were attacking with intent, but Arsenal seemed full of goals this afternoon. So Portsmouth’s strike, while not exactly a bolt from the blue, was entirely against the run of play.
The home side failed to clear a corner and Belhadj floated a cross to the far post where Kaboul bundled a header home. It was an old-fashioned goal and referee Steve Bennett allowed old-fashioned contact with Manuel Almunia in letting it stand.
The strike was a blow but Arsenal still had a strut about them. Van Persie shimmied himself free in the area two minutes from the whistle only to see his shot saved by the feet of James.
Fabregas felt his hamstring tighten at half-time and was replaced by Ramsey.
There was nearly a more significant change in the scoreline immediately after the restart. First Utaka went one-on-one with Gallas at the back and then went tumbling. If referee Bennett had ruled a foul against the Arsenal man then he was off. Fortunately he did not.
Seconds later Frederic Piquionne pounced on Gibbs’ indecision only to fire into the sidenetting. A decent chance.
They would be made to pay in bizarre circumstances as Arsenal extended their lead in the 51st minute.
Arshavin played over the free-kick, Van Persie flicked on, Vermaelen slid in at the far post but could only find Gallas, who kicked the ball into his own face and into the net.
The French centre back has scored in each of the opening three games but the last two have been laced with good fortune.
Arsenal were now searching for a goal to set the points in concrete. Eduardo shot straight at James while Van Persie had numerous chances to grab a fourth. However Portsmouth were refusing to lie down and only the timely intervention from Gibbs prevented Piquionne reducing the arrears midway through the half.
In the 69th minute, Arsenal did find their fourth when Van Persie split the Portsmouth defence and Ramsey raced through to slot home.
Wenger felt safe enough to substitute Arshavin and Eduardo for Bendtner and Fran Merida. Though just after making the changes Diaby picked up a knock that left the Arsenal midfielder ‘walking wounded’ for the next 10 minutes. Portsmouth were barely any better off with James having to be replaced by rookie Asmir Begovic.
To his credit, Piquionne had not given up. In the closing stages he shot straight at Almunia and then set up Utaka to sidefoot wide.
But the points belonged to Arsenal.
Arshavin - Expectations are not a problem
Andrey Arshavin is not worrying about heightened expectations this season.
After sparkling performances following his arrival from Zenit St Petersburg last season – including four goals against Liverpool at Anfield – all eyes are on the Russian playmaker in his first full season in English football. His searing start to Premier League life will also have excited his Russian onlookers. But the 28-year-old insists it won’t bother him.
“I’m not thinking of it a lot,” he told the Official Matchday Programme.“ I just look forward to the next game and keep things simple. Of course I’ll try to show my best for the team and the supporters of Arsenal, but we will see.
“On the pitch it’s difficult to play alone! If we play well together as a team it becomes easy to show yourself and operate at your best as an individual.“In Russia, people are thinking more about the upcoming international games to be honest.
“Everybody’s waiting for the Russia v Germany game in October because this should decide who qualifies for the World Cup out of the two of us – although we have to face Wales and Liechtenstein before then.”

Diaby - My three targets for this season
Abou Diaby has three major ambitions this season – to stay fit, win trophies with his Club and earn selection to the France squad for the World Cup.
The midfielder began the Premier League campaign in style by scoring a brace in Arsenal’s 4-1 win against Portsmouth on Saturday. It was another example of the 23-year-old’s undoubted talent but perhaps one that, as yet, has not been fully realised.
A succession of injuries has been the major cause of that. If Diaby can put those behind him then surely he can add to the two French caps he won in 2007.
"It was my first full game because I’d had a few injuries in pre-season,” he admitted after Saturday’s game. “So to score two goals and have the team winning was a very good day for me.
"Now I want to stay fit, play the maximum number of games and do really well this season.
"I know it's a big season for me and the World Cup is in my mind, of course.
"France have to qualify first but I want to be there and make sure I am in the team so it's one of my targets for the season."
Diaby’s team targets seem all the more realistic after three free-scoring wins to open the season. Arsenal were not exactly written off before the campaign began but they were barely backed to improve on last season’s fourth place.
"I think we are happy because we have won the first two league games,” said the former Auxerre midfielder. “It's given us a lot of confidence. We have some big games coming up in the future and we have to be ready.
"I feel we can definitely challenge everyone this season. We are ready to fight and to get something this year.
"We talk about winning the Champions League, of course. Arsenal is a big club and as a player you want to win that trophy so it's in our mind.”
To do that they must first see off Celtic, who arrive at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday intent on overturning a 2-0 first leg deficit.
"It will be hard against them,” said Diaby. “They are a good team.
“We are now focused on this game. Everyone knows it will not be easy even after winning the first leg so we will have to be focused to go through.
"But we have scored 12 goals in three games so far, we have confidence and hopefully we can keep going.”
Wenger - Injuries took their toll last term
Although he describes his squad as “massive”, Arsène Wenger believes injuries took their toll during the big games last season. Arsenal seem to have put their double Semi-Final disappointment firmly behind them with an explosive start to this campaign.
On Saturday, Portsmouth became the third side to be swept aside by the Gunners in 2009/10. Wenger’s men put four past the South-coast club to take their goal tally to 12 in three games. But, according to the manager, his side are still not at full strength.
"Today you had Philippe Senderos, Johan Djourou, Mikael Silvestre not even on the bench,” the manager explained. “Jack Wilshere not involved. Sami Nasri, Tomas Rosicky, Carlos Vela. When you put all that together, it is a massive squad.
"When I give a list of the 18 players, I see how many I have to leave out.”
Wenger’s squad was stretched to the limit towards the end of last season and the Gunners eventually paid the price in the last-four of the FA Cup and Champions League. But the manager believes that these injuries are often overlooked by the side’s critics. "People forget that at the end of the season in big games, we did not have William Gallas, we did not have Gael Clichy, no Eduardo, nor Tomas Rosicky,’ Wenger said. "You miss these important players.
"In the big games, if Eduardo can come on, you always have the hope he can score goals.”
'I think that this could be Abou's season'
On the decision not to send off Gallas...
"Honestly, it didn’t look to me to be as clear as that. Obviously you fear the decision from outside but you never know who pulls first in this kind of fight. You have to really see a slow-motion replay to see who pulls the first shirt. Maybe he tripped Gallas, I don’t know. It didn’t look as obvious to me."
On scoring goals and winning games...
"We always feel we can score goals. The information we got after the two first games is that we scored 10 goals, we could have scored more, so that’s a brilliant start. It should create confidence and momentum. The first week was very successful with two difficult away games. Now we have another week, a second week, it is another test with Celtic and Manchester United. It looks to be exciting and interesting."
On whether they are now title favourites...
"Well, you go a bit too quick. I said after 10 games in the League you will see a trend and unfortunately I must say you have a break after Manchester United and then we go away to Manchester City. I am not completely convinced by the organisation of the Premier League and the whole schedule because after two games, one half of the table already has one game in hand. I think maybe we should have done it in a different way."
On whether Arsenal’s passing is quicker...
"I feel we create good space for our midfielders to run in and to go into the box. On that front we look more dangerous. If you analyse our goals at the moment our strikers provide more than they score. That is maybe down to the way we play as well."
On Abou Diaby’s similarities to Patrick Vieira...
"Abou is a more offensive player but if he decides to play defensively he is exactly like Vieira. At some stage when Gallas moved out I put Denilson centre back and put Diaby central midfield in a defensive role. And he looks completely similar to Patrick to win the ball back. But he is a guy who has a quick transition from defence to offence, from box to box, that is his fantastic strength, to change quickly. Nobody can go with him when he has that, when we are on the counter-attack. He is fantastic."
On the frustrating time Diaby has had...
"He has been out for nine months. He has been here three years and I have seen that today he played his 100th game so that means he has been out for a long, long time. He has had little problems and he worked very hard this summer. This could be Abou’s year, it could be his season because he prepared well, he looks very sharp, very strong, he has all you dream to have to play in the Premier League."
On whether he would like to prove the critics wrong...
"It would give me a lot of satisfaction but you have to accept in our job the opinion of everybody and there is only one way to respond: win your next game. In our games it’s ‘shut up, let everybody talk and win your game’. That’s the best you can do."
On free scarves and the atmosphere at Emirates...
"I feel the fans were positive. Today we had some fantastic moments in the game, as well some moments when we were a little bit flat. You felt that the crowd was always behind the team. We are trying to create something special at the stadium, to make it more warm, to warm the whole place, and the scarves are a part of that. You will see much more – it is not up to me to talk about that – but we want to make this place very special. There is more we will do."
On getting the crowd behind you when things aren’t going well...
"I never expected it the other way round. At some places there are exceptions like up north at Celtic or Rangers where the fans are a bit more fanatical. But in a big city like London you have to accept that the waves have to come from the team and they have to get the people off their seats, not the other way round. When that doesn’t happen maybe the vibes coming out of the team are not right. People maybe cannot always explain what is happening in the team but they sense that if the whole team is right or not. Last year we did not give enough belief to our fans that we could win. And as well maybe the belief of our fans has been affected by the negative publicity we got."
On the lack of goals from strikers this season...
"It tells me that we have a game where we attack from everywhere. Robin van Persie plays central because he can create space, he has a very quick brain and a very sure technique, that means he can give the ball. He gave the ball today to Ramsey. Our strikers at the moment are providers. Eduardo did provide a goal for Diaby as well. For me, in a good team everybody can score and a good striker scores and provides. At the moment they provide more than they score but I know that Eduardo and Robin van Persie will score so I am very happy that at the moment they don’t score and we still score goals."
Wenger behind Arsenalisation of the Emirates
Arsène Wenger has charged his team with the task of putting some history into Emirates Stadium this season.
Arsenal are just starting the fourth campaign at their ‘new’ home and a process of ‘Arsenalisation’ is under way. The Club provided scarves for every fan at the first home game of the Premier League season on Saturday to boost the atmosphere.
Pictures and graphics have already starting appearing in the concourses as the Club puts its unique mark on Emirates Stadium - something, of course, that 96 years of history did all by itself at Highbury.Although Wenger is a firm supporter of Arsenalisation, he knows that trophies are also a crucial factor in a ground’s mystique."You want to transfer the history of the Club somewhere into the walls, and create a new history with the results,” said Wenger."
At the moment we have maybe not achieved that, not outside or on the pitch. My job and that of the team is to create it."Highbury had a natural soul because of all the history.
We have to create history here first by winning titles but also by making the place warm so you feel the history of the Club."The history of this Club we left behind in a different building. But it is important that in this new place the history and the values of the Club are kept alive.”
As part of Arsenalisation, there will be a Highbury Shrine, 12 ‘Greatest Moments’ walls on the concourses and, hopefully, 32 legendary players linking arms around the eight cores on the exterior of the stadium. It is hoped the changes will make Emirates an iconic stadium and Wenger is backing the plan wholeheartedly.
"I have met so many people who have been going to Arsenal for 50 or 60 years and had their heart and soul at Highbury,” he said. “We have to give them something back here where they think ‘that is part of what I have experienced my whole life’.
"They want to see the faces of the players they have seen - Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira, Cliff Bastin. That has to still continue here."The desire is there but not only from me, the board want to do it and personally I find it a fantastic idea.”

Fergie sets United 90-point target
Sir Alex Ferguson has set his Manchester United players a 90-point target if they are to win the Premier League for a fourth successive time.
United have endured a miserable couple of days since their shock defeat at Burnley.
Professional and amateur analysts have been offering Ferguson their advice, with most arguing it is time the Scot spent another chunk of the £80million received from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo to bring in a speedy forward.
Yet Ferguson has no intention of abandoning his policy of sticking with the players he already has, although he realises there is not too much margin for error.
"I will not be buying anyone," he stressed.
"I made the point - and I am sure of it. This is a great group of players.
"Yes, we would like to score goals. We have to step up to the mark and I am quite confident we can do that."
United must step up to the mark tomorrow because, by Ferguson's reckoning, another 29 wins are needed to clinch an unprecedented fourth successive league championship.
"There is not much leeway," he said.
"Last season we had a points total of 90 and even though we say it is the most competitive league, you still have to think of that figure to be the winner.
"Liverpool got 86 last season, which is an exceptional total too, but they only finished second."
Clearly, in order to achieve the short-term objective of extending a nine-match winning sequence and the long-term aim of landing more silverware, United need to start finding the net on a regular basis.
So far, all they have been able to manage is a single Wayne Rooney goal, with both Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen failing to take opportunities to get off the mark.
Owen failed to make contact with two opportunities at Turf Moor. And, while Berbatov did have an effort cleared off the line in the 1-0 win over Birmingham on Sunday, his languid style has not endeared him to United's demanding supporters.
"It is his style of play rather than the effect he has on the game," observed Ferguson.
"He is a very good player and I am particularly happy with him.
"Dimitar would like to score a goal. Strikers always feel as if scoring goals is the most important thing. That is the case with him and Michael, who could also do with one.
"He should have scored two on Wednesday. His movement and positional play in the final third is very good.
"We are just waiting on that one goal because it will set him off. I am sure of that."
It is the little things that seem to be conspiring against United at present.
Michael Carrick's missed penalty against Burnley is a case in point. The England midfielder has never failed in numerous shoot-outs and fancied his chances even though both Owen and Rooney were happy to have a go.
Who gets the job now is anyone's guess. It is not a problem Ferguson had to bother about when Ronaldo was still at Old Trafford.
Similarly, early-season injuries have robbed United of so many experienced defenders that Rooney's name must have cropped up as a potential captain last weekend before the job eventually went to John O'Shea.
Rooney has never made any secret of his desire to do the job. It just was not the right time.
"A lot would love to be captain and it is possible Wayne will get it one day - but not at the moment," said Ferguson.
"I gave it to John O'Shea because he is the longest serving player."
Ferguson does at least have Nemanja Vidic back this weekend, although not Rio Ferdinand, who has been ruled out for another "three to four weeks" with the thigh injury he suffered in training last Saturday.
It means Ferdinand will miss United's clash with Arsenal next Saturday, plus almost certainly England's friendly with Slovenia on September 5 and the World Cup qualifier against Croatia four days later.
Still, there are a few positives to cling to, namely the form of £17million wide-man Antonio Valencia, who returns to his old club Wigan tomorrow having taken little time to make his presence felt at Old Trafford.
"Some players have come to Manchester United and taken to it like a duck to water," said Ferguson. "Some need time.
"I know Antonio will be all right. You can see the potential, particular in training sessions.
"He is quick, he is tough and he is a good crosser of the ball. He has areas he must develop and we have an idea how to go about that but the lad has a chance."

Chamakh snubs Hammers
Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh has ruled out the possibility of him securing a move to West Ham.
Speculation had been mounting of late that the Hammers were looking to land the Moroccan frontman in an effort to ease their attacking problems.
With a number of forwards currently sidelined, Gianfranco Zola was known to be keen on Chamakh.
He will, however, be unable to bring the African ace on board as the player has distanced himself from a proposed switch to Upton Park.
"From a sporting point of view, I prefer to stay at Bordeaux than go to West Ham," Chamakh told France 3 Aquitaine.
Mourning
The 25-year-old also told of how he is still "in the process of mourning Arsenal" after intense speculation regarding a move to the Gunners this summer came to nothing.
He insists he is now looking forward to spending the 2009/10 campaign in France and helping Bordeaux defend their Ligue 1 title.
"Instead of joining another Premier League club, I'm going to opt for the very interesting year which Bordeaux is proposing on a sporting level," he said.
Finally, he dismissed suggestions that he is planning an imminent trip to London to meet with West Ham officials.
"This is just nonsense. I was aware of the West Ham rumours recently but it wasn't a priority," he added.

EVERTON AGREE TO SELL LESCOTT
If The Daily Mail is to be believed, this sorry, dull and decidedly tawdry saga will soon be at a merciful end.The paper reports that Everton have finally relented and will sell Joleon Lescott to Manchester City for around £22million.
Perhaps it's the financial pressure, perhaps he's realised that having an unhappy player on his books is counter-productive, or perhaps he's just a benevolent soul and is saving the rest of us from the crashing boredom of the whole appalling business. The Mail goes for a mixture of options one and two, and will receive assorted add-ons in addition to the £22million.
Talk then turns to his replacement, and the Mail mentions the names Steven Taylor, Sylvain Distin, David Wheater, Robert Huth, and James Collins.
CAHILL PREPARED FOR TURF BATTLE
Everton midfielder Tim Cahill knows all about the vibrant Turf Moor atmosphere as he prepares to face newly-promoted Burnley on Sunday.
He got an indication about how fervent the fans can be during his time at Millwall.
Burnley will have an extra spring in their step as well following the splendid victory against Manchester United in midweek, achieved thanks to a wonder goal from Robbie Blake.
Cahill told evertonTV: "I have played at Turf Moor before with Millwall and I know how difficult it is.
"I think the players really appreciate the fact of being in the Premier League, so they want to really relish it and try to stay there as long as they can.
"They should be very proud and happy with what they've achieved. They work hard at breaking teams down and will be very well drilled.
"I know it's going to be a tough, physical game. There's going to be a lot of balls in the air, probably not much football but we're ready for that.
"We've got a lot of teams in this league that play different styles and once we analyse them and go through their strategies, then hopefully we can break them down and win the game."
Jack Rodwell could retain his place in the side after his stunning double in the 4-0 victory against Sigma Olomouc in the Europa League play-off first-leg match.
It was just the result Everton were hoping for following the drubbing by Arsenal last weekend and 18-year-old Rodwell's contribution was an added bonus.
In the process he became Everton's youngest scorer in Europe and captain Phil Neville and manager David Moyes both believe the midfielder has a bright future.
Neville said: "Jack has tremendous ability and was the best player on the pitch. He showed confidence and no fear.
"That is what you want from young players and hopefully he keep progressing at Everton."
Moyes added: "He is a good boy, a good listener, who wants to improve. He is dedicated and we think he has a lot of potential."
Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha is also likely to retain his place ahead of Jo, after also marking his return to the side with two goals against the Czech side.
Fergie backing for Berbatov
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Dimitar Berbatov and is confident the striker will soon shine for the Premier League champions.
Berbatov came in for criticism last season after he netted 14 goals following his £30million switch from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Bulgaria international has yet to score in any of his side's opening three games this campaign, leading to further question marks over his form.
But Ferguson is sure the 28-year-old will soon hit the back of the net and then go on a scoring run as United look to defend their title.

DEFOE THE REAL DEAL - REDKNAPP
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has hailed Jermain Defoe as the complete striker now he has beefed up his physique.
Defoe suffered a foot injury in January and started working on his physique - then continued his gym sessions in pre-season, resulting in his explosive form at the start of the campaign.
The 26-year-old scored twice for England in Holland and followed that up with a hat-trick against Hull this week, leading Redknapp to back his frontman to top the scoring charts now Cristiano Ronaldo has moved to Real Madrid.
"Jermain looks the real deal now," Redknapp said. "He's come back stronger this year and looks even quicker with the power he has built through working with the fitness coaches in the gym."
Redknapp has backed Defoe in his driving row with the police and has questioned the motives behind pulling over the striker.

Defoe was stopped three days after announcing he plans to sue Essex Police for wrongful arrest, with his solicitor suggesting there were "serious questions to answer".
Earlier in the summer Defoe was detained on suspicion of driving while disqualified but the ban was actually suspended pending appeal.
Redknapp said: "Why shouldn't any young boy, white or black, have a nice car? Good luck to them.
"The kid is driving a big car, why shouldn't he drive a big car? A black kid driving, so what? You wonder why he keeps getting stopped, what is the game? What has he done wrong? Nothing has he.
"I don't know why they keep stopping him. Anyone can own a big car in this world if you work for it. You don't need to wear a shirt and tie and work in an office, or work in the city to have a nice car."
ZOLA BACKS SPURS CREDENTIALS
Gianfranco Zola is backing Tottenham to challenge the Barclays Premier League top four this season.
West Ham host their big-spending London rivals at Upton Park on Sunday
when both teams will attempt to build on opening-day victories.
But Zola is prepared for a difficult afternoon after claiming Spurs' summer transfer budget has given them a chance of figuring in the title race.
"I've been very impressed with Tottenham, they are a wonderful team," said the Hammers boss.
"In my opinion they are as good as the top four and they will certainly be competing with them until the end of the season.
"But don't forget that they have spent £60million this summer.
"I have to congratulate Harry Redknapp, he has done a wonderful, wonderful job.
"I watched them against Liverpool live last weekend and I was impressed. It is a tough game for us.
"They have improved their quality - when you spend money it's the quality of the players that you improve.

Redknapp has four international strikers at his disposal while West Ham only have Carlton Cole to lead the line, a situation they are seeking to rectify in the transfer window.
For all Spurs' playing riches, however, Zola would not exchange any of the clubs' players.
"I'm not jealous of Harry Redknapp. I do respect and admire him, he had done a great job, but I wouldn't change my team with any other team," he said.
"To make it clear I wouldn't even change my team with Real Madrid or Barcelona - maybe! I like my players and I trust them.
"They are improving, working hard and doing everything to be successful. I admire these qualities in players."
ANCELOTTI: SHEVA HAPPY TO STAY A BLUE
Carlo Ancelotti insists Andriy Shevchenko has a future at Stamford Bridge despite playing just one game in the last 15 months for the Blues.
The Ukraine striker spent last season on loan under Ancelotti at AC Milan and the Italian coach clearly believes he can get the best out of him in England.
Shevchenko replaced Deco in the second half of their 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Tuesday night.
It was the forward's first appearance in a Chelsea shirt since he scored against Bolton in May 2008.
Shevchenko failed to settle in England and departed for Milan when former boss Luiz Felipe Scolari took charge.
The frontman will be 33 at the end of this month but Ancelotti insists he could have a real part to play in their season.
"At present he is a Chelsea player and in the future he will be the same," said Ancelotti.
"Now he is better condition but we have a lot of strikers at the moment and for him it is not easy to find a place on the pitch.
"He trains very well with no problem and he is very happy to stay. He has a good position in the squad because his team-mates like his work.
"There is a good atmosphere in the team and he knows it is not easy to play for Chelsea because the competition is high in the squad.
"Shevchenko had a physical problem last year but now he has overcome that and we can use his quality for the team this year.
"He has no problem staying here. He wants to play but all the players want to play. When they don't play it is difficult to maintain a good feeling, a good atmosphere and motivation. But now he has a good motivation.
"He does not have a mental problem. He is well. But I have to choose who plays and it is not easy."
Shevchenko's age is not an issue for Ancelotti either. The Italian coach is used to selecting players who are in the twilight of their careers.
Last season he kept faith with 40-year-old Paolo Maldini along with 35-year-olds Dida and Filippo Inzaghi among others.

"We won a lot with players with experience."
Ancelotti made four changes for the trip to Sunderland and he will not hesitate to continue tinkering with his squad when he feels the moment is right.
Even the seemingly indispensable Didier Drogba will have to endure a spell on sidelines when Ancelotti decides the striker needs to recharge his batteries.
"There will be a moment for Didier Drogba to rest," said Ancelotti. "He is not a superman. He is very good player, very strong, but there will come a time when he will rest.
"I want to maintain a player in good motivation because I don't want to arrive at a certain moment with 11 tired players and 11 others without motivation."

WENGER BLASTS 'SELFISH' SELECTION
Arsene Wenger has blasted the decision to press Theo Walcott into action for the both the senior and under-21 England teams this summer as "selfish".
Arsenal boss Wenger has also warned that Walcott's injury absence, which the Frenchman attributes in part to his demanding international schedule, will have an effect on England as well as the Gunners.
Walcott turned out for Fabio Capello in the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra in June and was then selected by England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce for the European U21 Championships in Sweden.
The forward has already missed the start of the Premier League campaign with a back strain and his continued absence will also rule him out of England's September 9 trip to face Croatia in Zagreb.
Wenger said: "It was a selfish decision by Pearce, he just wanted the results. I spoke to Capello and him and expressed my point of view to them.
"It was difficult because I couldn't really prevent Theo playing for the under-21s."
"Now he is still unfit because he has not had a proper preparation for the new season.
"I'm not so much angry as frustrated. I cannot see the logic of it. Now both England and Arsenal have a handicap. It's why I didn't want him to play for the under-21s. After that we were under pressure to rush him back and he got hurt again.
"If he did not get back to us until July 29 and the season starts on August 15, how can he be fit in time? I knew I would have to start this season without him."

WORK PERMIT FOR EVER
Everton have managed to secure a work permit for Argentina midfielder Ever Banega.
The 21-year-old is expected to arrive on Merseyside shortly to complete a season-long loan deal from Valencia.
The 21-year-old is expected to arrive on Merseyside shortly to complete a season-long loan deal from Valencia.
Manager David Moyes is looking to employ Banega in a similar role to Mikel Arteta, who is currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury.
Moyes said: "Our application for a work permit has been passed and hopefully we will get to see him in a few days.
"He has very good ability and is a little bit similar to Mikel Arteta in lots of ways in that he can retain the ball and pass it.
"Ever is on a year's loan. If he's good then we will keep him, if he's not we can always send him back."

WENGER WON'T RULE OUT VIEIRA MOVE
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has not ruled out making a move for Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira.
The France international has been linked with a return to the Gunners but the likelihood of a possible deal seemed to fade in recent weeks.
However, Wenger has hinted he could still swoop for Vieira before the summer transfer window closes.
He is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror: "I'm not yet moving for him. But until 31st August, it's possible."
Vieira, though, plans to remain at Inter after holding talks with manager Jose Mourinho ahead of the new season.
He told L'Equipe: "You never know what can happen, but I have made my decision. I will stay at Inter. I am fine, I have no reason for leaving.
"The end of last season was difficult for me as the coach didn't trust me anymore. But his words have changed. I have resumed training sessions without any physical problems.
"I have played a lot during friendlies, much more than I expected. However, I have received no guaranties. Physically I am perfectly fine. Now I just need to play.
"Indeed, Tottenham showed interest in me joining them. Harry Redknapp, who I respect a lot, proposed me a challenge that could have been exciting on a sporting level.
"But it would have been very difficult on a human level. For one or two seasons with Spurs I could not see me wasting nine years spent at Arsenal.
"Frankly, there has been nothing concrete with Arsenal. With Arsene sometimes we have phone calls, but that's all."
